A new rating needs to be created for material like this, both unforgettable and alienating, heartwarming and horrific. It isn't foul or explicit by nature, in fact it is consistently delicate, clever, and beautiful, but it seems to have greater power to offend than the most shameless, tacky ecchi or gorefests on the market. This is a series about the slow dehumanization of little girls who are rescued from abusive environments by the government only to be brainwashed as assassins with a slavish devotion to a superior who may or may not choose to show them love in return. This is a situation made all the more unsettling by the constant reminders in each episode that the girls are aware of the cruel hand they've been dealt and fear the day they will “die empty and alone,” (a direct quote.) The content here is fairly tame, particularly for a political thriller, but it's the spirit of the premise itself that makes viewers squirm in discomfort. In Hellsing, hailing bullets, hordes of zombies feasting on entrails and demonic blood rituals are a thrill met with laughter and applause. In Gunslinger Girl, the sight of a nine year old girl with a blank expression cracking off perfect headshots by the second on firing range targets is all it takes to send some viewers turning their heads in disgust. What this show really needs is a bright yellow sticker across the front labeled “NOT FOR EVERYONE.”

Obviously that would be a terrible idea in terms of marketing, but it's not meant to be an insult. In most cases the moniker “not for everyone” denotes high quality that only certain people will appreciate, and Gunslinger Girl fits this description perfectly.

The Special Ops division at the heart of this institution has been creating some very unique weapons of counter-terrorism that must never be made public: cyborgs. It's not the cybernetic transformations and conditioning of the subjects that the government is so desperate to hide, but the nature of the subjects themselves. Even so, their lives are short. For a series with such a complex storyline, one might expect an ocean of text to wade through, but these chapters continue to maintain a careful balance between wordiness and brevity. True, there are some scenes that are loaded with talk—one chapter is nothing but a sequence of interviews—but on the other end, there are moments where an entire page goes by with only a couple of words being said. Best of all, the writing and translation are wonderfully direct: no fancy phrasing, no overwrought paragraphs (and this is why Death Note will always be inferior), just the words that need to be said so that the characters and the reader know where the story is headed next. Even sound effects are used carefully; it's possible to go several pages before ever seeing onomatopoeic Japanese characters on the page. Thankfully, Viz's Signature line does not edit out the sound effects—readers looking for translations can look up the glossary in the back.

Once again, words, images and story come together to make Monster a one-of-a-kind thriller. A couple of strong story arcs occupy these two volumes—the search for Nina's childhood memories, and Eva's secret mission—but built around that are a few stringy loose threads, like the puppeteer in Prague, the fate of Dr. Tenma as he continues to run from the law, the lawyers and officers still looking into the mystery of Johan, and oh yeah, what has Johan been up to lately? So maybe the master storyteller and artist isn't always masterful, but wherever Naoki Urasawa takes us next, it'll be a terrific ride.

The last couple of chapters in Vol. 14 and the first half of Vol. 15 take a more conventional tack, shifting away from the realm of memories and toward a conspiracy-action arc involving Eva Heinemann. For someone most often seen as an emotionally unstable drunk, it is perhaps Eva's finest hour, culminating in a bittersweet sequence where she reunites with Tenma. (Remember that stuff about love and hope?) Even Eva's temporary bodyguard—yet another briefly-introduced minor character—wins audience empathy with his "heroic slacker" role. The back half of Vol. 15 isn't quite as focused, though, and these chapters seem to wander back and forth, trying to keep up with all the various plotlines—Nina continues to dig up memories, other people reveal fragmented clues about the Red Rose Mansion, and Tenma continues to run as he plots his next move. Oh well, leaving you hanging is one of the key points of the suspense genre, right?

If it were enough just to arrange story events in a particular order, then Urasawa would be a decent novelist—but it is his mastery of art and comic paneling that make him one of the all-time greats. The use of flashbacks and fragments to show Nina's memory is just one of many techniques; the wide range of events in these two volumes offer a full showcase of his skills. Whether it's everyday life (the puppeteer on the streets of Prague), or building up suspense (Nina tracking down the Red Rose Mansion), or intense action (gunplay and chase scenes), or even just dialogue, the story is told with perfect spacing and timing of panels. In fact, a silent image or series of images can say all that needs to be said. And while Urasawa's style can seem rectangular and plain at first glance, there is a wealth of creativity within the rectangles: the variety of character designs, the strong facial expressions, the details in the backgrounds, and the viewing angles that make each scene unique. To maintain all these skills without getting too flashy or confusing is perhaps the greatest artistic talent.

As Monster draws ever closer to a dramatic finish, one pressing question remains: does Naoki Urasawa have the talent to keep track of all the crisscrossing plot lines? What may have once been a tense cat-and-mouse game has evolved into something much greater, involving one mouse, seven different cats, two dogs, a fox, and a chicken—or at least it looks that way. Volumes 14 and 15 pass through several of these storylines, and it can seem at times that new story threads and new characters pop up whenever ideas start running out for the existing ones. Yet each chapter delves deep into its characters and draws out powerful emotions, so wherever the story is headed next, thrills and suspense are guaranteed.

Of course, those thrills don't necessarily mean action and gunplay: some of Monster's finest moments are the ones that occur in the characters' minds, and Vol. 14 proves it by digging into Nina's childhood. With fragmented images, flashbacks, and storybook excerpts, these chapters capture perfectly the fleeting nature of human memory—and it can take just one horrific recollection to leave Nina, as well as the reader, in shock. Yet there is also a glimmer of hope; the puppeteer that Nina meets is a comforting presence, and proof that even the most minor character has a purpose. (On the other hand, some may find it annoying that Urasawa has thrown in yet another character with ties to the central mystery. Enough already!) But that is perhaps one of the most overlooked qualities of Monster: that amidst all the mystery and horror, there are moments of love and hope and all the good things about humanity.

Since it describes the origins of key characters and situations, a newcomer could pick this one up and follow it well enough to understand what's going on. Certainly part of the appeal is all of the attention on, and references to, characters and situations that have been alluded to in other works, but even without that this makes for a solid read for those who like an absorbing, suitably chilling, and easy-to-read teen-appropriate diversion.

An English teacher or literary analyst might (fairly) criticize Kadono's writing style for its simplistic paragraph structure, comparatively lax variance in sentence length, and overuse of passive voice, but the direct, efficient style makes up for its technical deficiencies. Kadono displays a gift for effective creation of unsettling monstrosities, of the proverbial wolves in sheep's skins but also of characters that are, in some way, extraordinary and how such characters might view the world differently because of their extraordinary nature. On the rare occasions where he actually uses action scenes they never lack for punch, although on the whole the content gives off much more of a heavy drama/light horror vibe. He also clearly understands character psychology and how to use it to his advantage without getting into overly elaborate schemes or overly weighty psychological analysis.

Seven Seas' 293-page production includes three pages of Afterword comments by Kadono and three pages of translation notes. As with previous novels, it opens with several color pages featuring cast members with relevant quotes, although unlike with previous novels these quotes are reflective additional thoughts about characters and situations (apparently from Nagi's perspective) rather than actually being lifted from the text. Each chapter begins with a pencil sketch, with one additional two-page spread towards the end. The novel closes with some amusing variations on bio blurbs.

After the initial premise kicks things off, Here is Greenwood falls into a well-worn formula with isolated chapters that cover specific moments in the Japanese school year, carrying only a trace of continuity and no genuine, overarching plotline. Readers who feel overburdened by ongoing soap opera plots can finally give their brains a rest, but without a driving force behind the story, it could be easy to lose interest in Greenwood if the first few chapters aren't instantly appealing. Although the first volume does end on a cliffhanger, a general storyline--something involving Kazuya's troubles back home, perhaps--would add some dramatic weight to balance out this lighthearted manga.

The mid-80's style of artwork in Here is Greenwood will remind most readers of Maison Ikkoku or Kimagure Orange Road, albeit with a cleaner look. Nasu's linework appears as if it ought to be accented with dreamy bubbles and flower petals (the manga itself was originally serialized in the Hana to Yume shoujo anthology), but instead she keeps the backgrounds free of clutter and focuses on straightforward visuals. Because of this, even the densely packed panels don't interfere with the enjoyment of the story. However, that lack of clutter goes too far at times, reducing backgrounds to a point where the reader loses any sense of location. This sparse approach almost ruins one of the best jokes in the entire manga: when Kazuya walks into a bathroom on page 25, the fact that he's in the bathroom is pivotal to that scene, but it may take several re-reads before noticing the urinals that are shoehorned into a corner of one panel. In the chapter where Greenwood gets hit by a blackout, it's hard to tell whether Mitsuru and Shinobu are inside or outside the rooms as they patrol the halls. Despite shortcomings like that, Here is Greenwood has a visual style that will appeal to old-school fans and those looking for an antidote to the overly slick, sharp designs of the present day.

What kind of manga can be a high school comedy and yet have hardly any scenes in the classroom? Ask Yukie Nasu, because that's exactly what she accomplishes with Here is Greenwood. Throwing a new spin on the Japanese school experience by focusing on dorm life, Here is Greenwood walks the line between cute and bizarre with mixed results. Be prepared to laugh... but be prepared for some flat, confusing moments too.

Like many successful comedies, Here is Greenwood relies on its quirky characters for humor. Perennial loser Kazuya, with his "why me?" attitude, may in fact be the most normal person in this story. His brother Kazuhiro is a male nurse at the same school, which is a source of never-ending embarrassment for Kazuya, while his sister-in-law Sumire is hilariously clueless about his crush on her and keeps inviting him back home. The core of Greenwood's offbeat sense of humor, though, comes from the head of residents, Mitsuru. All too aware of his bishounen features, Mitsuru happily takes the role of the dominant male and selfishly uses his influence to play pranks on Kazuya and take little presents from each of his residents' care packages. Things only get funnier when the equally good-looking class president, Shinobu, teams up with Mitsuru to cause even more trouble. (Sorry girls, the two of them don't get busy or anything--but Shinobu does throw in a subtle hint!)

There's a redhead calling herself Oda Nobunaga and she recruits Hideyoshino to help her fetch the complete set of Crimson Armor, which legend tells will help her unite Japan.

That's pretty much it. The gimmick in Battle Girls - Time Paradox most resembles a made-for-dudes version of Sengoku Basara (note that the Japanese title is Sengoku Otome) but without any of the crazy winking over-the-top hilarity that made that show fun. This show is written like nobody's ever created a series with this exact basic premise a hundred billion times before; we spend the entire first episode following around the series’ frustratingly idiotic and endlessly self-narrating Hideyoshino - who never ever shuts up - and accomplishes in these 21 minutes what any other self-aware show recycling this premise would've accomplished in the prologue. Normally if you're leaning on an idea that's beaten into the ground as much as this one has, you would at least attempt to get the boring rehashed story idea out of the way quickly and then sell us on some kind of twist or turn that would help the show stand out among the myriad other ‘hapless student transported to fantasy kingdom' shows. Hell, the prologue here is the 2-minute stretch from the middle of the episode where Hideyoshino meets Oda Nobunaga, which happens barely 10 minutes in, which I think might be the land speed record breaker for a series tipping us off to just how many corners they're going to cut.

All that aside, SKET Dance succeeds in a few key areas. While it is undoubtedly a show with a very basic message for kids, the three principle characters are at least somewhat interesting and mostly well-written. The story we're given here is kind of a red herring – Sugihara is presented as the episode's protagonist up front, but it's really Bossun, Himeko and Switch who are the focus of the show. It's easy to see how this whole thing could fall into a generic “let's save the latest dork from the bully of the week” format, but there's enough playful energy among the main cast to hold your attention for 20 minutes and maybe wonder about their personal relationships and how they formed this club. The scenario between Sugihara and his nemesis is pretty well-handled, too; it isn't completely black-and-white and the writing suggests the show is interested in telling stories that aren't entirely simplistic morality plays.

Here's the premise: the SKET-Dan is a team of teenage specialists who preside over the campus of Kaimei, helping troubled students in their time of need. Their club name is an anagram: Support, Kindness, Encouragement, Troubleshoot. Bossun is the leader; he rallies the team and keeps a close eye on the student body. Himeko is the muscle, and Switch, who speaks only through his laptop's text-to-voice, is the brains of the outfit. In this first episode, they take in Sugihara, an insecure new transfer student who makes fast friends with the trio and is also being terrorized by a bully from his past, one who is has noticed his newfound friendship with the SKET crew.

If someone had pitched this show to me before I knew it was an anime series, I would've assumed it was a made-up premise for a non-existent, hilariously didactic 1980s syndicated American cartoon, or maybe a retro After-School Special I'd never seen. It is, after all, a team of likable but spunky outcast kids who Totally Show Those Bullies What's What and teach us all a lesson about being who you are and standing up for yourself. All that's missing is the GoGurt commercial. Maybe a Lunchables sponsorship.

It's predictable and rote to a strange extreme, but as a pleasant, fluffy BL romantic dramedy, Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi works pretty well. The key here is the writing – the characters are all particularly well-written, and we spend most of the episode inside Onadera's head, with his cynical and jaded inner monologue. It's sort of a refreshingly realistic personality, and the storyline just breezes right along. Even though you can see every plot turn coming from a few thousand miles away, the show is very well-executed and entertaining, so it rises above the standard-issue BL storyline. Production values aren't stellar but for a show rendered in pastels with minimalist character design, it's perfectly functional. Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi won't blow you away with its originality, but it's easy breezy fun for BL folk (and open-minded others). Still, I'm imagining the what the pitch session for this show was like.

That unfortunately proves to be a problem for the English cast, who, hampered by the need for rewrites and fidelity to the orignal, can't get the timing of the scene down quite as precisely as their Japanese counterparts, reducing its intensity. With so much of the emotional content hinging on her, Stephanie Wittels proves serviceable as Misaki, but can't quite match the occasionally unpleasant veracity of Chris Patton's turn as Sato. The suicidees all sound suitably depressed, and Luci Christian gets Hitomi's mix of longing and outright insanity exactly right. Greg Ayres continues to excel as nerd-with-a-nasty-streak Yamazaki, with special kudos going to the relish with which he handles the final scenes in episode sixteen. Aside from the occasional f-bomb and inserted joke, the re-write is as faithful as one could desire. The dub doesn't add enough to convert the sub-preferring crowd, so preferences for it will split along the usual dub/sub battle lines, but it remains exemplary work nonetheless.

This volume is a Jekyll and Hyde beast, one half hilarious cultural commentary and one half hard-hitting personal drama. Watching Sato devolve into a slave of yet another aspect of nerd-dom is all good fun, but let's hope that the series at large, like the first two episodes on this disc, remembers that its true strength lies not in subculture explorations, but in its ability to make supremely sympathetic the kinds of deeply scarred individuals who in less adept hand might have been simply unpleasant.

Complementing the increasing power of the series is director Yusuke Yamamoto's increasingly skilled use of the series' solid character designs and superior background artistry. He evokes moods more successfully than before, especially now that the kinks in the use of the Pearl Brothers' largely guitar-based score have been ironed out, and is able to turn a scene surreal with little more than a shift in the hallucinogenic sound design. He keeps the action sedate enough to prevent the cracks in the series' limited animation from getting (too) apparent, and gets the timing during the big cliff-top suicide scene damned near perfect.

The first of these four episodes is so blisteringly good that it inspires a very real fear that the series has already peaked, and with nearly half of it yet to come. Sato's sojourn on the island of death begins as the same brand of discomfiting humor that has marked the series so far, but builds to a milestone in Misaki and Sato's relationship that is simultaneously soul-withering emotional development and blackest comedy. The delightfully unhealthy relationship between the two has long been the series' emotional core, and it takes a turn here that confirms every sneaking suspicion about Misaki's mental health, proving that her feelings for Sato are far more complicated and staggeringly dysfunctional than anyone suspected. The effect that her confession has on her and Sato is devastating, the palpable, hopeless anguish of the episode's conclusion ranking among the best moments yet this year.

It's so potent in fact that it takes an entire episode to wind down. While the episode proves revealing and deals sensitively and realistically with the fallout of the “off” party—hinting at the all-too-realistic reasons for Misaki's twisted psychology and demonstrating that while still pathologically self-involved, Sato is learning to make allowances for the feelings of others—it also serves to return the series to the status quo. Which is to say that afterwards it returns to black humor so pointed that even non-otaku can end up as collateral damage. The accuracy with which it nails how role-playing games prey on the dissatisfactions born of unfulfilling everyday lives is as painful as it is funny, and Sato's descent into the delusional embrace of manufactured fantasy ends with a denouement every bit as awful as the one that ended his descent into porno addiction. As enjoyable as that is, it's still disheartening to see the series retreat back into its deconstruction of otaku obsessions after so successfully venturing into the world of very real emotions.

While the chronicles of Tetsuro and Maetel's journey have a timeless quality to them, the production values of this late-70's creation are a different proposition entirely. Modern eyes may have to adjust to the sometimes shaky animation, where linework might blur or jitter, and colors are limited to whatever paint jars were at the animation studio, and technical details like perspective and lettering are subject to human error. But when the visuals come together fully, there is a warmth that can never be matched by the digital era—the deeply surreal landscapes of extrasolar worlds, the fluidity of motion that would probably be sanitized and auto-corrected to death if done on a computer, the mechanical details rendered on each train, and the sinuous style that is Matsumoto's trademark. Go ahead, fault him for only having three character designs—heroic warriors, leggy ladies and squat little comic-relief types—but these archetypes have stood the test of time, and surely are more memorable than many of today's cookie-cutter protagonists.

Also stuck in firmly the 70's is the series' soundtrack, which relies on a genuine orchestra mostly because synthesizers weren't that good yet. While some of the harmonies and instrumentation drip with mid-20th-century cheese, it's clear that the no-electronics restriction is actually a boon in some cases: nothing can match the richness of a full string section or the plaintive quality of solo winds when it comes to expressing the emotional spectrum. Less impressive, however, are the theme songs, which rely on a more traditional, almost archaic style of songwriting.

Even characters who seem like outright adversaries to Tetsuro end up earning the audience's sympathy: stories like "The Red Winds of Mars" and "The Fossilized Warrior" involve raygun-wielding young men who want to build a new life by getting aboard the 999, but with only one train pass to go around ... well, it's hard to know who to root for when these guys deserve as much of a chance as Tetsuro. And it's those kinds of moral dilemmas that make the series stand out from other bang-bang space adventures: often times the bad guys aren't bad, they're just in a bad situation—and there isn't much Tetsuro can do to help them find justice in this universe. Yes, even in a fantastical world where trains go barreling through space, the harsh truths of reality ring true.

However, not every episode is so profound, and every so often comes a lightweight offering. Episodes like "Nuruba, the Planet Without Form" and "The Comet Library"—where Tetsuro and Maetel have to fend off wacky alien hazards rather than contemplate the fate of the downtrodden—are clearly more like light fillers, designed to take the edge off the darker and more serious tales.

Without a doubt, however, the high point of the anime is its distinctive aesthetic. Though the quality of the animation per se is about average for a TV series, MADHOUSE (Ninja Scroll; X) does the gothic fantasy/horror look better than pretty much anybody, and they were the perfect studio to bring Death Note to life. Character designs are invariably pitch-perfect, and the palette is gloomy yet decadently saturated. The anime's two opening sequences, both of which appear on this DVD, are deliciously disturbing—and well worth watching just by themselves on the basis of artistic merit.

Both the Japanese and English language voice casts are convincing, albeit in their own unique ways. Most viewers will probably find that they prefer one over the other. The latter does not seem to have been chosen specifically to copy the former's execution, and interestingly, with the notable exception of the brilliant Kappei Yamaguchi as L, the English voice actors average significantly longer resumes. The two most important the extras on the DVD, a behind the scenes documentary and a commentary track for episode seventeen, spotlight them…though having Death Note interpreted by people who are not especially close to the anime in its original Japanese production context seems of dubious value. (Other DVD bonuses include production art and trailers.) The dark, angry sound of the soundtrack is likewise appropriate, though the head-banging, punk sound of the opening and ending themes will undoubtedly sound like undifferentiated noise to many.

Up until this volume, Light's descent into the Abyss was a well-paced, finely-crafted piece of narration. But now, Light has given up the Death Note and forgotten his Kira “calling,” and the plot as it should have been has screeched to an awkward halt. Of course, the point of the Yotsuba&! Group subplot is to forestall the aforementioned inevitable for as long as possible (the conclusion of a moneymaking series), and the obvious foot-dragging quickly wears on one's patience. And sure enough, two of the episodes here focus primarily upon the development of supporting characters Aizawa and Matsuda, which, though interesting, is not strictly necessary. It would not have been missed had it not been included in the first place. The Yotsuba&! executives likewise exist primarily as filler material, and their personalities are hardly developed at all. Character-wise, the most enjoyable moments involve the interaction between Light and L, and watching the two rivals beat each other up while handcuffed provides some vaguely amusing comic relief (not to mention a healthy helping of rich fodder for yaoi fangirls).

The problem with adaptations is that they tend to reproduce the flaws of their source material, and the Death Note anime is no exception. Like many popular series, the manga continued for far too long, and what could have been one of the greatest plots in Weekly Shounen Jump's venerable history became a flawed, inelegant cultural product (mis)shaped by commercial imperatives. Viz Media's fifth Death Note DVD, which includes episodes 17-20, unfortunately corresponds to the weakest of the manga's subplots.

At its base, the series is a straightforward tale of good versus evil. L is the good guy; Light is the bad guy. If this were an ordinary, cookie-cutter iteration of that sort of plot, the story would be told from L's perspective. But what makes Death Note so interesting is that it is told from the villain's—Light's—perspective instead, and it is his character that is thoroughly developed, nuanced, and fleshed-out. L, by comparison, is pretty one-dimensional. It's kind of like the original Star Wars trilogy told from the Emperor's perspective, or the Harry Potter series told from Voldemort's. Even so, any astute viewer knows that good always triumphs over evil in the end (the Japanese taste for shades of moral gray aside), which naturally means that Light is doomed.

The English dub is a highlight on this disc, and it's worth checking out. The acting is all very earthy and natural, especially when the actors aren't forced to match lip flaps (which happens with surprising frequency). The dub isn't very faithful to the original Japanese track; the subtitles rarely match what the characters are saying in English. Unless you're a purist, though, this shouldn't really matter much. The basic meaning is the same, and the new English dialogue flows much better. I suppose the Japanese track is a more ‘authentic’ experience, since the show takes place in Hokkaido, but it's hard to deny that the dub track adds a lot to an already enjoyable little show.

There isn't really anything remarkable or spectacular about Diamond Daydreams and it's hard to imagine a show like this becoming a fan favorite or a blockbuster title, but the fact that this show manages to be completely inoffensive and mostly entertaining and also be based on a dating sim is encouraging. Heck, I can imagine female fans getting as much entertainment out of the soapy proceedings here as any male fan, which again is a feat considering the source material. In short, it might be a bit of an acquired taste, but anyone who's sick of milquetoast losers surrounded by buxom sex kittens aching to marry them might find relief in the quiet, dignified drama of Diamond Daydreams.

It's really refreshing to watch a show based on a dating sim that doesn't make you wish you could reach through the screen and slap the characters around a little bit. The interactions and the flow of the melodrama in Diamond Daydreams is just natural enough to be believable. The females aren't one-dimensional violent bitches or cooing lolicom bait. They're mostly introspective and a little quiet and, most importantly, relatable, to a certain degree. The fanservice level is practically nonexistent and there isn't a lot of pandering to be found. If there's a complaint to be made about this show, it's that the stories are fairly banal. Anyone uninterested in basic human drama might find themselves bored.

The production values aren't bad, either; the animation tends to be a little static, but the backgrounds – particularly in the Akutso episodes – are well-rendered. The character designs are a little odd; everyone has large eyes and a bulbous forehead, with stick-like limbs. Otherwise, it's all pretty typical of the genre. The only thing that really stands out like a sore thumb is the opening theme, which is a really cheerful pop tune that doesn't match the serious tone of the show whatsoever. It's somewhat odd to see these girls jumping around and laughing in the intro and then once the show starts they're all wide-eyed and tearful, spinning long monologues about how their lives could be so much better.

Let's face it; games based on dating sims aren't widely known for their incredibly deep storylines, well-developed characters or unique, original situations. In fact, most of them barely rise above their source material; by and large, they're just simple harem dramas, populated by cardboard characters. Diamond Daydreams (formerly known as Kita-he ~Diamond Dust Drops~, not that “Diamond Daydreams” is any less a nonsense phrase than the original title but at least it ditches those vomitous tildes) fortunately eschews the majority of the clichés associated with the genre and is, instead, a series of entertaining and sometimes surprisingly involving little vignettes.

This first disc involves the stories of two different girls, Akutso and Karin. Akutso is a coming-of-age, independently-minded teenager who's trapped in an arranged marriage with a man she never loved; naturally, she starts falling for the 40-year old hipster doofus who keeps coming to the fish shop she works at, much to her disapproving mother's dismay. Karin's a sick girl, stuck in a hospital with a serious condition; her new physician is brash and cold to her. Her only outlet? An online blog that connects her with someone who could be the man she's been waiting her whole life to meet. The running theme is pretty easy to pick out; these girls are stuck in crappy situations and thanks to their own tenacity or tough choices they manage to liberate themselves. It might sound a bit like an afterschool special or a particularly dry soap opera, but thanks to thoughtful and well-paced execution, the show is pretty entertaining.

Most of the original Tenchi Muyo! English dub cast has returned, most importantly Kate T. Vogt as Washu and Jennifer Darling as Ayeka; they don't have the biggest parts but would be the hardest English VAs to replace since both so clearly-defined their roles. They've lost none of their quality over time, and the original did have one of the better mid-'90s dubs. Some issues could be raised with the script, which in typical FUNimation style is occasionally way off what's being said but does flow smoothly. Less acceptable are a couple of blatant errors, such as referring to Jupiter in the English dub when the subtitles and picture on the screen both obviously refer to Saturn, but it's still a solid effort overall.

The on-disc Extras all seem to have been taken from the original Japanese release, as they include Japanese TV trailers, a “behind the scenes” Japanese music video for the closing song, and a pair of 12-minute-long “Real Tenchi Tour” featurettes. The latter take the viewer to real-world locations that were used as the inspirations for on-Earth settings in the various Tenchi series. Also included is a reversible cover, English tracks in both 2.0 and 5.1, and FUNimation's standard practice of showing Japanese credits when the Japanese dub is on and English credits when the English dub is on, with the ability to switch between them using the Angle button.

Though the writing might slack here, the artistry maintains the same standards as always for Tenchi OVAs: good but not great foreground and background art, reasonably good animation, and constant character designs. Misao's design looks so disturbingly like Mihoshi that it can be unnerving watching him and hearing a male voice instead (but that's also the point), while other newer arrivals are typical Tenchi style. One thing Tenchi series have always done well are their unique spaceship designs, and that hasn't changed.

The background music is another let-down, as it doesn't do a particularly good job of supporting and enhancing the moods of the given scenes. The instrumental opening sounds somewhat like a remix of earlier Tenchi themes, while the upbeat closer is a nice but unexciting number reminiscent of early Oh My Goddess! theme songs.

But it's not just the main characters or a cast so broad it's forcing the story to stretch out too much. The attempts at comedy rarely click, the whole thing lacks energy, and the series does a much better job of setting up potential action scenes than executing them. In fact, the only battle that actually is shown in any significant detail in the first two episodes is Sasami's duel with Mashisu, where she proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that even cute, young, and seemingly completely inoffensive Jurain princesses are still people to be reckoned with. For long-term Tenchi fans that is arguably the single biggest highlight between episodes 4 and 5.

And then there's episode 6, which offers its own set of problems. The three Goddesses of the Tenchi Universe have been suggested before, but for the first time they appear together and get actively and directly involved. Exactly what all is going on here is confusing (where did this Counteractor come from, and what's the deal with the girl Tenchi saves?), and it doesn't help matters that the episodes starts in the middle and continues from there, giving the viewer the feeling that at least half an episode is missing. What it does do is finally explain some long-standing mysteries about what the Goddesses have been up to and how Tenchi, and his ability to generate Light Hawk blades, fits into the picture. While satisfying in a way, the writing and plotting in all three of these episodes is sorely lacking.

As Mitsudomoe's first season wore on it introduced a strain of simple character development. While it may not have been meant as insurance for a time when pure humor could no longer support the series, it pays off here as if it was. For a bunch of one-trait wonders with hideous designs (think grown-up kewpie dolls with buck teeth and bobble heads) they're a pretty enjoyable bunch, and discovering new facets of their various relationships is a surprising amount of fun. The Marui sisters of course remain the main attraction, their believably fraternal mixture of camaraderie and unhesitating cruelty saving a good many otherwise poor gags. But lesser relationships—the unexpectedly tender support Miyashita lends to Yoshioka, Futaba and Shin's baggage-free friendship, Shin's exasperated boy-bond with Chiba—also do their share of rescuing. To be sure we'd rather be laughing our collective asses off, but there is something to be said for just hanging out with the Marui triplets and their screwy classmates.

The moments when we are allowed to laugh our asses off are thanks as much to Masahiko Ohta's visual instincts as the inherent humor of a given joke. Incongruously good animation adds just the silly punch that Mitsuba's nighttime race astride Futaba (and Futaba's freakishly fast swim technique) needed. Spot-on emulation of shoddy sentai filmmaking, including obvious stunt men and questionably choreographed superhero poses, adds considerably to the first episode's already estimable fun. A smartly employed Titanic parody not only makes the pool episode a riot (you know Hitoha is in trouble when her inner tube floats past a quartet of violinists playing "Nearer, My God, To Thee"), but also segues into a lengthy and inventive violation of the featured hymn.

That said, like the series as a whole, Ohta isn't quite working at full capacity. His visuals lack that indefinable spark that lets you know an artist is truly enjoying his work. It shows in the lazy ways he uses the Marui father's inherently funny design, in the less than convincing way that characters interact with their frankly mediocre surroundings, and even in the occasionally pedestrian usage of composer Yasuhiro Misawa's otherwise refreshingly well-deployed assortment of silly themes and tongue-in-cheek mood music. But mostly it shows in the comic timing, which only periodically matches the lethal effectiveness of the first season's.

Zōryōchū's dilemma can be summed up very simply. Mitsudomoe's one overriding advantage was that it was all kinds of funny; Zōryōchū is fewer kinds of funny. And that's a big problem. If it doesn't shape up before its end, Zōryōchū will be one of those sequels that feels more like an extended extra than an extension of the original. It had better hurry. With a mere eight episodes planned, it's already halfway there.

Of course, there are even more obvious signs of the series being a product of its time in the visuals, where we learn that the ideal of feminine beauty means having wildly bouffant hair and being built like a pro wrestler (which is in fact where the series got its inspiration). The show's color palette is also awash in loud Miami Vice colors, from the pair's hot-pink spacecraft to the interiors where their adventures take place. Thus, despite its best attempts to depict a flashy, sophisticated view of the future, the fashion and design aspects give this one away as a creation of the 80's. Despite the limitations of the time, however, no one can accuse the staff of going cheap on production values—the backgrounds are wonderfully detailed with buttons, lights and wiring to give off that sci-fi ambience, and the animation is fearless in the way it takes on challenges like full-body action sequences and tricky view angles. It may not be as sharp and polished as today's digital efforts, but those animators clearly put in the work.

Such effort is not as evident in the audio, though, where most of the soundtrack consists of dated synth-pop or archaic-sounding blasts of brass. The theme songs, too, are typical space-fillers with their midtempo rock beats and simple but forgettable melodies. The generally muddy audio is also the result of not having better equipment to work with at the time—it sounds like it was recorded straight off the TV, but that may very well have been the best quality source they had.

Nevertheless, the series lost something that it never fully regained when its production values dipped after those first episodes. Much of the series' appeal was visual, in its evocative background art, slick, expressive character designs, and beautifully choreographed, exhilaratingly violent action set-pieces. Then the character designs flattened out, the settings got less interactive, and animation shortcuts put a damper on the action that the choreography just couldn't quite compensate for. And it didn't help that the Ishin's crew was dressed in cast-offs from The Pirates of Penzance. Here at series' end the show recaptures, however briefly, some of that visual appeal. The last episodes are practically choked with action as its cast goes at each other with mecha, gun, fist and sword. The confrontations are bloody, fluid and exciting, drenched in musical bombast and once again composed with that eye for movement and composition that the series almost lost during some of its more cheaply animated battles. Though the character designs never quite return to the depth and detail they once had, important emotional revelations are aided greatly by some unusually mobile and detailed facial expressions—though Jin's mania is allowed to get positively excessive. However, the polish is only periodic—only patches of the sleek surface that made the first volume so easy to swallow remain, certainly not enough to make the series' shortcomings entirely palatable or to seduce you into forgetting how uneven the series overall is. As an interesting aside, in an unusual move for an action series, the show's fan-service leans heavily towards beefcake.

And while that may be enough for old-school anime nostalgists to get their jollies, it's also the reason why contemporary fans may fail to latch on to the show. The closest thing this gets to being clever is referencing other genre works—an obvious Star Trek nod in the first episode, an allusion to the "Lovecraft" star system in Episode 13—but otherwise every episode relies on the same old formula of (1) Bad stuff happens; (2) Lovely Angels are called in to deal with bad stuff; (3) Lots of shooting, chases and explosions as bad stuff is dealt with. There's not even any continuity from episode to episode, and the closest thing to character development and back-story is when one of the pair's missions involves Yuri going in search of her childhood sweetheart. After 25 years of evolution and revolution in the genre, this kind of popcorn entertainment doesn't quite thrill like it used to.

Perhaps this boxset's true value comes not from its contents, but how those contents can be examined in the context of anime history. After all, if Dirty Pair were remade today, our heroines would be in middle school, half their power would be derived from magic, and they would never do anything so impure and shameless as to go on dates with boyfriends. But times change, and the series is a fascinating window into the ideals of that era: assertive adult women in the lead role (but sadly still beholden to chauvinist stereotypes), the glorification of space-age technology before space programs went stagnant, and themes of man vs. science—two of the episodes feature supercomputers going haywire, while another two feature genetically modified animals that have gotten too smart for their own good.

The DVD packaging itself also gets something of a barebones treatment, with Japanese audio and English subtitles the only language option available. There's also barely any bonus content on the 3-disc set aside from a clean version of the opening sequence. (Trailers shouldn't even count as bonuses when they're just ads for other titles.) Clearly this set is aimed at the collector who simply wants to have the series on hand and isn't concerned with bells or whistles.

Although the Dirty Pair boxset may hold sentimental value for longtime fans who want to relive their 80's anime-club glory years, the actual content of the show has aged poorly, relying on formulaic adventures that exist in little 25-minute bubbles and don't even form an overall narrative arc. This may only be the first 13 episodes, but it's hard to imagine things suddenly changing in the second half; the idea of girls with guns gleefully blowing things up in space is clearly all that was needed to support an anime series back in the day. We may sit back and marvel at the dedication to hand-drawn animation technique, or study how audiences at the time envisioned the distant future, but as for enjoying the series at face value? The mileage is definitely going to vary on that.

A wide-ranging music score gives Eureka 7 a feeling that's both classic and modern—rich orchestral sounds dominate dramatic scenes, but rock and dance tracks are the genres of choice when the Nirvash takes to the sky. Either way, the results are always tuneful and fitting. The same might be said of the lively opening and ending songs: Home Made Kazoku's "Shounen Heart" captures the adventurous coming-of-age spirit through hip-hop, and Asami Izawa's catchy "Fly Away" says more of the same but with a soul flavor.

The many emotional scenes in these episodes are handled confidently in the English dub, with Johnny Yong Bosch leading the way as Renton. For a character that goes through several moods in each episode, he gets all of them right, while still maintaining that youthful, high-pitched tone. Stephanie Sheh's Eureka is equally adept, although her rhythm could be more flowing. The supporting cast all turn in solid performances as well, and with a script that follows the subtitles closely (sometimes even matching word for word), this is one title that you could easily watch dubbed all the way through.

The good news is that the rest of the film is so much fun that this seems like a minor concern. The characters, Makoto and Chiaki in particular, are so lovable that spending time with them is a joy. Makoto, with all her high-spirited but thoughtless energy, feels like Sana-chan from Kodocha grown up. Chiaki feels like a shoujo version of Ichigo from Bleach. Voices supplied by live action teen actors Riisa Naka (from the Japanese drama version of My Boss, My Hero) and Takuya Ishida (Night Time Picnic) lend just the right amount of realism (I much prefer this approach to voice acting over the use of traditional seiyuu). Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's sumptuous linework takes simple curves and makes them so compelling, we'd be content if the characters did nothing but sit there.

As Makoto jumps, she learns more and more about what the people around her are really thinking, and how much of a self-absorbed bubble she's been living in. The lessons she learns about herself and her friends are heartwarming and triumphant. If only the conclusion could have taken the ball and run with it, we could have had a masterpiece. But instead, we'll have to settle for “great.” Like Makoto, we'll just have to deal with it.

A broad and interesting supporting cast does liven things up, however. While none of the other characters are especially well-developed, they are invariably distinct both in appearance and in behavior – not an easy task given the sheer number of “name” characters being juggled here. One of the newly-revealed HiME is a wild child with a flair for dramatics who's older than she pretends, another is a man-hating trollop with a very mean edge, and the third is so earnestly in love that it leaves her vulnerable. There's also still the standoffish, sour-tempered rich-girl outsider Natsuki (who is likely patterned off of Kirima Nagi from Boogiepop Phantom), the catty and immature Mikoto, the creepy Rei Ayanami clone Miyu, the annoyingly possessive Shihu, and the varied array of Mai's friends, executive committee members, and potential male love interests. Nagi continues to be so self-righteously mysterious and manipulative that some viewers may cheer when something in the last episode actually catches him by surprise, even though it involves a tragedy to another character.

The American television network G4TV began streaming a 91-second trailer for Resident Evil: Damnation (Biohazard: Damnation) film on Monday. The game company CAPCOM and the production company Sony Pictures Entertainment is making the project as a sequel to the 3D computer-animated Biohazard: Degeneration (Resident Evil: Degeneration) feature film.

The trailer will be included with the live-action Resident Evil: Afterlife film on 3D Blue-ray Disc and DVD in North America on December 28. The Resident Evil: Degeneration film itself is slated to open in 2012 in theaters with stereoscopic 3D equipment.

The series' look starkly reflects its priorities. The characters are flat, angular, irregular, and generally unpleasant to look at, in addition to being typically inexpressive and sometimes interchangeable (women mostly). The cars, on the other hand, are gorgeous: Sleek, freakishly accurate and stinking of personality from their lovingly rendered 3D CG lines to their meticulously reproduced engine noises. When Keisuke wrecks his FD, it's far more painful than when he wrecks Kyoko. There is something deeply wrong about that, but also rather inevitable. There's often a sense in Initial D that a human is just the chewy meat center of a car. At the very least, an Initial D character is a binary organism that includes a person and a car, neither of which is complete without the other.

Given the allocation of animation budget and artistic skill, though, you'd be excused for thinking that the car is the more important half of the organism.

Live-action Yamato/Returner's Takashi Yamazaki to write/direct December 2011 film

The next film that Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, Always: Sunset on Third Street, Ballad) will direct after this month's live-action Space Battleship Yamato film is Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki, a 3D computer anime film set to open in Japan next December.

Yamazaki is basing his screenplay on Naita Aka-Oni, a tear-jerker fairy tale by Hirosuke Hamada (Kuroi Kikori to Shiroi Kikori). However, the film will be an original story. Naki and Gunjō are friends who live on Mononoke Shima, and they cross paths with a human child.

Tsubaki's main creative asset is her artwork. For such a young creator, her layouts are outstanding, and although her drawing style changes dramatically from volumes one to three, by about halfway through the second volume she has developed a luminous, almost ethereal grace to her character designs that seems utterly wasted on such a banal narrative creation. Pay particular attention to how she draws Natsue, for example. It is simply gorgeous. Perhaps the mismatch between art and story/character development is a function of Tsubaki's relative youth and lack of experience with life, and she will improve with time. I would recommend, though, that in the future she be paired with a good writer.

In conclusion, The Magic Touch does not have the wit to be satire or the strength of conviction to be genuinely affective romance, and without either of these things, it is easiest to say that it has nothing worth cherishing at all. Indeed, the only thing “magical” about it is how quickly you will be absolutely desperate to get its yucky fingers out of your personal space.

The official website for the Pokémon anime films has announced that the first Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! film will open in Japan next summer. The Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! television anime series premiered on September 23; this latest Pokémon anime series ties into Nintendo's Pokémon: Black and Pokémon: White games, which also launched on Japanese Nintendo DS portable game consoles last month. http://www.pokemon-movie.jp/

The synthesizer-heavy musical score mixes some traditional Chinese themes in with cutesy themes, an occasional mildly dramatic one, and themes which sound like they were directly borrowed from an ero game for an overall effect that is energetic but unimpressive. The same could be said of opener “Flower of Bravery,” which captures the enthusiastic spirit of the show but is bland enough that it does not distinguish itself from the crowd. Closer “Yappari wa Sekai Atashi Legend” which complements a hyped-up beat and highly enthusiastic singing with an SD parade, works much better. Japanese vocal performances conform to the expected mix of cutesy interpretations.

TV Tokyo co-produces film about war in Kyoto between demon, humans

The animation company Studio Pierrot and the television network TV Tokyo are promoting their Fall 2010 film Onigamiden at Tokyo International Anime Fair this week. The film's story revolves around the war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto, 1,200 years ago during the Heian period. The anime adapts a 2004 two-volume novel by the same name from author Takafumi Takada. The official website of the film has already launched. The film will open in Japan on October 9.

Stranded on a fast disintegrating Ark, Allen Walker and his Exorcist friends must battle various members of the Clan of Noah in order to find a way off. Kanda has already sacrificed himself, and Krory will have to find newfound strength in his blood if he is to take down Jasdevi. Meanwhile, Allen, Lavi, and Lenalee come face to face with Road and Tyki, who are determined to stop them in their tracks. Road quickly traps Lavi in a nightmare while putting Lenalee out of commission. Allen is left to face Tyki alone, and he has lost once already against this particular Noah. Will the rematch have a different outcome? Allen is going to need to power up his Innocence in a whole new way if he is to have a prayer left.

That's not to say this is an exact carbon copy of the first quarter of the Evangelion TV series – some things have been changed. The script is different in that the dialogue has been made a lot less confusing; they're very upfront with anything related to the Third Impact, disposing of all the cryptic non-clues and vague hints the TV series dabbled in. When Ramiel, the sixth angel, attacks, Misato takes Shinji right on down to the NERV basement and shows him Lilith, who now has a cool new abdomen made up of hundreds of pairs of human legs, and tells him that it's his job to prevent the Angels from making contact with Lilith or else the world will end, which isn't something we learn in the TV series until later on and even then it's pretty vague. It's a clear attempt to make this material more accessible and less confusing to an Evangelion newcomer, which isn't a bad thing. EVA-01 now has an awesome new roar that sounds like it's being fed through a vocoder, and Ramiel has a chilling feminine scream when it gets sniped. There's also a nifty surprise at the very end that will delight EVA fans and hints at some big and potentially very cool changes to the story in the next film, but ultimately it's a tease.

The biggest problem with this most recent volume of Twelve Kingdoms, which covers episodes 41-45, is that it's also the last... at least for now. The series, which was originally supposed to be much longer, ends with episode 45 because the show's creators did not feel that they had enough information from the novels on which it's based to continue. Does this mean we may eventually see a continuation of the series? Possibly, but nothing has been announced by the time of this writing so anything more is likely to be years off. That's depressing, because Twelve Kingdoms has, during its run, been one of the most engrossing fantasy anime produced to date. Certainly there's no better fantasy series out there when it comes to world-building, and it's among the best in character development. Those jumping on at this point should have little problem understanding the story, though the complexities of the world's structure, naming conventions, and a few background references will be lost on novice viewers. Really, though, why would you start viewing a series with its last volume? If this one interests you, go back and watch the earlier volumes first, if you haven't already!

This particular volume contains all of the “The God of the Sea in the East, The Mighty Ocean in the West” storyline, which was set up with episode 40 of the previous volume and runs through episodes 41-44. It marks the third time in the series that Youko, the overall central figure, has sat and listened as other characters relate a multi-episode story from the histories of The Twelve Kingdoms and its characters. Most other series couldn't get away with this, but Twelve Kingdoms is so rich in its detailed world and diversity of characters that fans of the series are unlikely to be bothered. This time, events focus once again on the King of En and his kirin Enki, who have been two of the more interesting recurring characters since first appearing in the early episodes of the series.

They are fine characters for carrying a short story arc, especially since Shouryuu's abrasive, devil-may-care attitude hides a great degree of competence and self-assuredness—a marked and refreshing contrast to Youko's inexperience and uncertainty. Ultimately the story becomes yet another object lesson for Youko as a ruler, though one with a more subtle message: be wary of letting a quest for even the most worthy and righteous of ideals lead you astray. Episode 45 is another recap episode and wrap-up to the “God of the Sea” story arc; though it does not leave plot threads hanging beyond the ultimate disposition of Shoko (and the storyline of Taiki from earlier in the series), neither does it have the feel of a close-out episode.

Graphic content in this volume is not as strong as in the previous one, but there are still some scenes of implied intense violence. The series originally played on Japanese TV in a Saturday morning time slot, so it would be considered appropriate for family viewing over there. Over here, though, it still deserves a PG-13 rating.

As with previous volumes, “Reverie” is sorely lacking in extras. Nothing beyond trailers is to be found, and there are no liner notes. Balancing this is the presence of five full episodes, though, and a separate Set Up option for playing the English language track with subtitles on. The packaging is still quite appealing.

Twelve Kingdoms may be over for now, but it certainly won't be forgotten. It isn't often that a gem like this one comes along.

As mentioned earlier, there is an element of simplicity to the story that lends to Castle of Cagliostro a certain timelessness. The movie can be enjoyed by everyone in the family, from children to great-grandparents.

The packaging, however, leaves something to be desired; while Cagliostro comes in the standard plastic keepsake case, the artwork is decidedly inferior to the original Japanese VHS packaging. Nowhere on the cover does it state that the movie involves Lupin III, although it does give credit to Hiyao Miyazaki at the top. Still the dark navy blues could lead someone to believe this movie is altogether serious, when in fact their are plenty of moments of action and slapstick comedy to balance out the drama. Similarly, the insert is nothing special, merely listing chapter stops and showcasing a few neat screen-captures. The silkscreening of the disk itself is outright dull; nothing but pure black color and the title of the movie itself. Ugh.

The first sign of trouble is that the bloblike Larvae which mob the heroes in Red Night fail to generate any sense of menace once one realizes that they do not actually do much of anything beyond making intimidating moans at their targets. The second big sign of trouble comes when the minimal attempts to develop Kakeru get stuck in an “I will protect Yuka no matter what” rut, resulting in his character not standing for much of anything beyond the single-minded protection focus. And the third comes when the Black Knights, who are supposed to be the elite foes, get whittled down to their toughest ones in completely formulaic fashion.

Other problems include lead-handed managing of the matter concerning Kukuri, the series making a big point of showing one character gradually growing insanely possessive only to completely revert the character back to normal at the end, and a supporting casting composed primarily of common ero game/visual novel stand-bys, although the writing does try to mix things up a bit by having Cheery Girl also be Split Personality Girl and giving her an almost ridiculously dark past to reconcile against. (In her earlier days she repeatedly served as a suicide bomber because she couldn't die from it, among other bits of nastiness.) And can we come up with a better villain motivation than the tired, nihilistic “the world is crap, so I must wipe it clean” shtick?

Not that anyone who has been watching up to this point will be expecting anything different. The series has made it pretty clear from the get-go that audiences expecting intelligence can go to hell while the rest of us break out the beer and let the monster mash-up shut down our synapses one by one. The somewhat darker and more serious tone does cut into the series' supply of fun—after all, no one tunes in to watch Hiro have a crisis of faith or Liza and Reiri form a reluctant bond—but there's still enough blackly funny slapstick on hand to keep even the most leaden episode afloat.

But frankly, being able to keep leaden episodes afloat isn't nearly as desirable as not having them in the first place. For a series with nothing but moths in its cranium, Princess Resurrection is awfully determined to be taken seriously; resulting in dramatic clunkers like Liza's transparently tragic friendship with a shark woman and Reiri's short-lived banishment from vampire society. Serious stuff, and dull as hell. Higher aspirations are wonderful and all, but if you don't mind your limits, you're going to end up with dead spots. And spots of this are dead indeed.

Those dead spots wouldn't be quite so dull if the series looked a little better. Some top-drawer action, for instance, would have gone a long ways towards salvaging the Liza/shark woman episode. But top-drawer is a long, long way from the reality of Princess Resurrection. Between this and Strawberry Panic!, it's beginning to look like Masayuki Sakoi is in charge of some kind of ultra-cheap second unit at MADHOUSE. The series displays none of the studio's usual energy and skill. As with Strawberry Panic!, Sakoi wrings some interesting expressionistic imagery from his apparently non-existent budget, and pumps every cent he saves with his simplistic animation and frequent use of stills into a few key scenes (usually Hime's bursts of balletic violence). Sharp editing saves a few of the other action scenes, but for the most part this is a remarkably stiff, clunky production.

With the exception of the fan-service, that is. Character designer Kazuya Kuroda is famous for his luscious female designs, and rightfully so. Every female in the series positively leaks pheromones, while his male designs look wan and uninspired in comparison. He also serves as chief animation director here, and his below-the-belt preferences betray themselves in the loving care with which he animates Liza's epic abdomen and Hime's lean physique.

If further proof is needed as to the potential rescuing power of higher production values, watch the final episode. An OAV episode with a marginally higher budget and as pointless a plot as any in the series, it's a perfect example of the series at its stylized popcorn-fare best.

Whatever else can be said about Sakoi—and much of it isn't good—he's got fine taste in music. The hard-driving opener gets each episode moving and Mikiya Katakura (composer for the Ali Project) does his level best to keep it going with an interesting mix of atmosphere, energy, and bouncy fluff. He doesn't always succeed, but that's not really his fault.

It's pretty much impossible to hate Princess Resurrection. It's easy enough to chafe whenever it does a face-plant while attempting narrative acrobatics far beyond its meager capabilities, but then Hime creams a galloping ghost with a baseball bat and everything's all right. Sure it has lazy visuals, a huge substance-vacuum, and a tendency to let its dark humor lapse to tedious effect, but it also perverts a classic shonen-romance scenario into something truly nightmarish, has the courage to feature an unapologetically ruthless female lead, and regularly kills its stereotypical harem hero. Hard to hate, right? Of course, being madly in love with Ayako Kawasumi's magnificently disdainful Hime helps.

Up until middle school, friends Kouichi Sanada and Kazuki Aihara looked up to older girl Mao as a Big Sister figure, but then she moved to France. As the school year begins and the spring term progresses, each soon finds other romantic interests: for Mao, it's a taciturn jazz saxophone player Eiji Kai, while Kouichi gradually strikes up a relationship with the shy beauty Yumi. A series of odd encounters leads Kazuki to become fascinated with Eriko Futami, the school's pretty resident genius, whose copious intelligence and odd way of approaching things isolates her from others. Kazuki must also contend with soccer jock Asuka, who regularly corrals him for practice but may have her own crush on him. No veteran anime fan who watches the opener and/or first episode of Kimikiss pure rouge (or, for that matter, even looks at the DVD cover art) should be at all surprised to learn that this 25-episode 2007-2008 anime series is a loose adaptation of the eponymous PS2 dating sim game released by Enterbrain in 2006. What may surprise some are the liberties that J.C. Staff took in converting the game into anime form. Instead of making a straight-up adaptation, which often results in an awkward-feeling romantic effort as the guy tries to cycle amongst many girls, J.C. Staff split original main character Kouichi Aihara into two different characters, one (Kouichi) who retains the original's looks and the other (Kazuki) who retains the original's soccer affinity and little sister. They also added another prominent male character, Eiji, into the mix to further diversify the love interests. The result is a love square, an entirely separate love triangle, and some suggested pairings which look like they may develop into a third love polygon. That's a whole lot of relationship dynamics to bounce around, and that's what keeps the first 13 episodes busy – and that does not even include the running side joke about the “romance” between Nana and Narumi's plushie frogs.

That is the entire sum and substance of the series, too. Nothing elaborate or gimmicky can be found here, just pure, lightweight romantic drama mixed with occasional doses of equally lightweight humor, all set within one of the most mundane possible slice-of-life frameworks for an anime series. The series even stays true to the source game's original age 12+ rating by almost entirely eschewing fan service; all that is present in the first 13 episodes are a few suggestive panning shots of female characters (especially in the swimming competition episode) and the regular kissing scenes, which is the one factor which distinguishes this series from others of its type. Beyond that, this is just a bunch of interrelated stories about boys and girls trying to hook up, figure each other out, and fall in love, and the complicated ways that the heart can shift when people are first learning about romantic love.

And yes, this can be as banal as it sounds. The writers are clearly depending on the degree of complications in the relationship arrangements (a flow chart would have been a nice Extra, but sadly Sentai Filmworks did not include one) to carry the series, but viewers have to muddle through a few episodes of character and connection establishment before the assorted romantic entanglements achieve sufficient lift to send the series aloft. If that aspect does not click with the viewer, though, then the series can easily become a tedious exercise in lightweight drudgery. Oh, sure, it does have some comedic moments which might initiate a few chuckles, such as the ongoing love story between the frog plushies or the reactions of the restaurant patrons when the “taste-blind” Eriko dares to try the notorious Very Berry Ramen, but those alone will not sustain a viewer through the series. They are simply there to provide extra flavor for those who already savor the taste.

Of all the series to air on Adult Swim, Bleach is arguably the best-cast and among the best-performed in its English dub. Even with such an expansive cast, finding a role that is not a good fit in English requires intensive nitpicking. Some of the English actors do put their own spin on a character with their choice of inflection or speaking style, but those efforts almost invariably work; Terrence Stone, who also voices the cat form of Yoruichi, turns in the highlight of the interpretations as sadistic Captain Kurotuschi. Ultimately Bleach works despite its flaws because it provides plenty enough flash backed by just enough story and characterization and occasional outbursts of humor. It does so with a certain style and the support of a capable musical score, which can allow viewers to weather its more annoying traits. This is a key set to own, too, as it wraps up one major storyline and lays the foundation for the one which follows the upcoming Bount story arc.

Fortunately, things get better in the second half of this volume—the plot is no longer aimlessly adrift, showing the characters' everyday lives and engaging in silly harem antics. Instead, the bad guys are on the move again, with the action ramping up in the last few chapters and closing on a triumphant cliffhanger that showcases Namu's fantastic repertoire of moves. Unfortunately, this portion of the story also falls victim to the much-overused formula of "Here's what the bad guys are up to, but we're not going to tell you what it is, other than that they plan to do very bad things." The scenes involving the Kaionji faction are laughably campy in their presentation, often ending in dramatic facial close-ups as the villains make ominous pronouncements like "Kill them all". No doubt it's fun to watch the good guys pick up the pace and get into some fights—but they seriously need better bad guys to fight against, not just scrubs and goons sent out by the higher-ups.

No matter what the story's prevailing mood may be, the artwork is usually up to the task, either carrying the comedic energy of Namu's misadventures or showcasing the spiritual sorcery that the protagonists are capable of. The bold lines and busy backgrounds always provide some point of interest on the page—especially in the special-effects-laden fight scenes—and the clean, rectangular layouts keep things moving at a steady pace. Occasional lapses into gag style during lighthearted moments also add visual variety. The character designs themselves aren't as praiseworthy, however, relying on familiar cues and stereotypes: Keita the spiky-haired everyman type, Kuro and Namu the lovely magical maidens (whose similar hairstyles make them difficult to distinguish when they're not in costume), Akane the stylish "normal" person, and of course, dozens of dark-clothed tough guys serving as the villains. If anyone wanted a prototype for how to build a solid but unspectacular action series, this would be an ideal title to steal the visuals from.

What this series lacks in creativity, it tries to make up for with attitude and energy, which is not only reflected in the art but also in the dialogue. The characters are a bit more talkative than average for the action genre, but their exchanges are always fun, especially when Keita and Namu are mouthing off at each other. Even Namu's taunts and come-ons when she faces Kaionji's thugs are worth a rousing cheer. We can also be thankful that these chapters are less fixated on made-up paranormal jargon—the characters still occasionally lapse into Tera/Root/Sub/Mototsumitama/Sanshinryong gobbledygook, but telling an exciting story takes priority here. A thorough translation job also provides enough information without getting in the way: sound effects are preserved in Japanese, but translated on the side, and a brief set of notes in the back provides some interesting linguistic points.

Like waking up the morning after a rowdy night out, it can be hard for an action series to get back on track after a climactic plot point. Certainly, Black God tries its best—introducing a new character right after the Okinawa arc, then jumping back into some brawling action after a few chapters—but the execution and plot elements are as ordinary as they come. Namu's feisty character is appealing, to be sure, but her back-and-forth bickering with Keita is typical of any domestic-life comedy. The fights with Kaionji's agents are enough to get the blood pumping, but don't expect to see any plot advancement while our heroes are laying the smack down on anonymous meatsacks. And the chief executive villains, despite their best efforts, still look like a bunch of sneering stereotypes everytime they stand around declaring how evil they are. Make no mistake, Black God is still a fun supernatural-action thrill ride—but it shows little interest in becoming anything more.

These ghosts that everyone is getting in a huff about are more or less the focal point of the entire series. They are what drives everything forward. Good, bad, neutral—all shapes and sizes. The great thing about a ghost that lives inside a boy is that it does not have to be grounded in the reality of the environment. Yoh lives in modern day Tokyo, but at any time he, and thus the reader, can have access to any number of ghosts from any number of places, time periods or backgrounds. That's the draw of Shaman King's premise, really. It promises some exploitation of its creator's imagination. Unfortunately, we don't really get any of that. The only inherent advantage of the ghosts' corporeal existance that the series uses is their ability to be conjured from the ether at will. When Yoh uses, meets, or fights a ghost, that ghost does not need a real reason to exist. It does not need roots of any sort within the story or the environment. As a result, the ghosts end up more like pokemon or cards than the people Yoh so fervently insists they are. They exist as a gimmick—as collectibles. Largely mundane and one-dimensional, we get to watch as their malleability turns from an exercise in creativity to the ultimate writers' crutch. Hey, need a plot device? How about a deus ex machina? What better than a being that can appear and disappear from the void on a whim? Need a sword? Here's your smithy!

You can imagine how this might grow a little tiresome.

The marketing of this release is even more of a travesty because Wings of Honneamise is one of those rare anime titles which should be in the collection of any anime fan, regardless of your normal tastes. It holds historical significance within anime because Gainax was founded to make it (its creators needed a formal company to hold the funding), and while its original 1987 release was a financial failure, its successful video release helped demonstrate the potential of the emerging Japanese anime video market. It also, over time, established itself as an enduring classic which has impressed even mainstream American movie critics with its merits. But there's a better reason every anime fan should see it: it's just that good.

Every one of Bandai's yen can be seen in the faultlessly smooth and multilayered animation, extraordinary attention to artistic detail, and vibrant use of color and special visual effects. The richly cluttered backgrounds are a wonder to behold, and the sheer inventiveness of the setting has to be admired; art director Hiromasa Ogura didn't just copy some real-world culture and tweak a few details, he borrowed ideas from cultures around the world in crafting a thoroughly unique setting with its own distinctive technology, uniforms, and architectural aesthetics, down even to minor details. Character designs feature the big faces and button noses characteristic of the time period of its manufacture, and some do stray a bit into caricature, but both their features and apparel combine to create detailed and interesting looks. A quality bit of fan service (albeit in an especially distasteful scene) doesn't hurt, either.

All of the visual splendor would feel empty without a quality story to flesh it out, and in that department, too, Wings delivers big-time. Its writing is a spectacular effort of crisp detail layered with subtle philosophical and sociological underpinnings. Here can be found two intertwined stories: one involving the complexities of putting together the first ever manned space flight, the other about one man's efforts to find a purpose for his life and see it through despite the enormous obstacles that lay in his way, including his own faults.

The writing does not shirk from delving into the many practical obstructions inherent in the efforts to put a man in space, and neither does it follow the well-tread anime path of glorifying effort or success through personal determination. Its lead character shows his flaws as thoroughly as any later Gainax hero or heroine does; at a loss for purpose at first, Shiro must find his inspiration from Riquinni, and one shocking scene midway through demonstrates that he is all too vulnerable to the normal foibles that plague men. But persevere he does, which leads to a climatic launch that ranks amongst the greatest individual moments ever put into any anime production. The words Shiro speak while circling the planet, whether taken in Japanese or English, provide a masterstroke finishing touch by gathering together everything Shiro has seen and experienced into one heartfelt – but by no means sappy – appeal.
